Frequent Tropical Storms in Guam

It is estimated that Guam faces about 2 to 3 storms per year. Guam is known for frequent storms, but why? The main reason lies in the temperature. From 1999 to 2019, the number of hot days in Guam increased by about 80, while the number of cool nights decreased. Storms can occur when warm and moist air comes from water in excess of 26 degrees, and wind near the water blows in different directions, converging and causing air to rise and clouds to form. With increase in water temperature and warm, moist air, the number of storms forming in Guam increased.

The Damage Tropical Storms Cause

Storms in Guam are frequent, which lead to many unfortunate damages. Including tropical depression, storm surge flooding, heavy rain, destructive wind, tornadoes, and many more. Storms can damage nature too. Strong winds and floods leave broken branches, and  trees snap from floods. Storms on their own, are fairly avoidable by not going outside and many other procedures, but it’s the other factors that come with storms that are most dangerous. Some side effects from storms can even take someone’s life.

How to Prevent More Storms in the Future

Storms in Guam are getting more and more frequent as the temperature rises, and Guam is one of the places where you can see the effect of rising temperature. Recycling, renewable energy, and reducing gas emissions are some ways that can slow down climate change and stop increasing natural disasters.
